Empakaai Crater Hike
Escape the safari vehicle and immerse yourself in one of Tanzania’s most spectacular walking experiences with a guided hike to Empakaai Crater. Nestled within the breathtaking Ngorongoro Highlands, this lesser-known volcanic crater offers stunning scenery, rich wildlife, and a unique opportunity to explore the wilderness on foot.
Located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of the famous Ngorongoro Crater, Empakaai Crater is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and panoramic viewpoints. Upon arrival, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views of the crater’s emerald-green soda lake and, on clear days, the majestic silhouette of Ol Doinyo Lengai, Tanzania’s only active volcano and a sacred mountain to the Maasai people.
Accompanied by an experienced guide and an armed Ngorongoro Conservation Area ranger, begin your descent through lush montane forest into the crater. The hike takes approximately 30–45 minutes downhill, offering opportunities to spot birds, wildlife, and native vegetation along the way.
At the crater floor, explore the tranquil lakeshore, home to a variety of birdlife including flamingos, water birds, and other migratory species. Wildlife sightings may include buffalo, bushbuck, hyena, elephant, and other animals that inhabit this secluded natural sanctuary.
The combination of spectacular scenery, wildlife encounters, and the peaceful atmosphere of the crater makes this one of the most rewarding hiking excursions in northern Tanzania.

MAASAI VILLAGE TOUR
It is possible to visit one of several Maasai villages during your safari. However, these villages are close to the main roads and whilst you will meet many Maasai, have a tour around their village and have an opportunity to learn about their culture, some clients have fed back that the experience felt a little uncomfortable. It costs $50 per vehicle and during the visit, you will be encouraged to buy some of their jewelry / craft (this is by no means compulsory). It is inevitable that over time, the experience has become less authentic and we are in the process of sourcing alternative options for our clients. You are very welcome to visit, but we wanted to be open and transparent about the kind of experience you can currently expect.
